The Brazilian Pantanal

The Pantanal is renowned as a birder’s paradise with a whopping 1,000+ endemic and migratory bird species cataloged. Located within the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso in Brazil (with a little crossing over into Bolivia and Paraguay), the Pantanal is a rich marshland that sprawls over approximately 195,000 square kilometers (75,000 square miles). That’s ten times the size of the Florida Everglades. This landlocked river delta sits in the center of the South American continent, south of the Amazon basin and east of the Andes. Overflowing with birds, vibrant vegetation, and exotic animals lurking in the marshes, it’s a remarkable natural wonder that few know about. The name “Pantanal” comes from the Portuguese word pantano, which refers to a wetland, swamp or marsh. It is home to a variety of sub-regional ecosystems, each possessing distinct hydrological, geological and ecological characteristics.

Piraputanga Village: The Local “Riviera”

For those who leave Campo Grande towards the Pantanal, the passage through the Serra de Maracaju announces the arrival in the Pantanal plain. The mountainous chain occurs in the stretch between the municipalities of Aquidauana, Anastácio and Dois Irmãos do Buriti. Piraputanga is a district of Aquidauana city. The area is already famous for local ecotourism dedicated to trekking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, archaeological sites hikes and contemplation of landscapes. The mountains and their immediate surroundings are fairly preserved with semi-deciduous forests in the slopes, valleys and grottoes – in the groves the forests can be wetter than in the foothills and lower arboreal savannas on the mountaintops. These geological peculiarities allow for unique vegetation that is not found in the Pantanal plains, therefore harboring species of birds that are not common or in some cases, that are not even found in the lowland areas.
